Who is a Candidate for Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a skin exfoliating treatment that can be customized to each patient’s specific skin concerns and skin needs. This customization and the strength of a chemical peel are dependent on the chemicals used in the peel solution. Common ingredients used in chemical peels include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and carbolic acid (phenol). Different types of peels include:

  • Light chemical peels or superficial peels target the outer layer of the skin and can improve surface imperfections like fine lines,
wrinkles, uneven skin tone, sun-damaged skin, and dry skin.
Medium chemical peels remove the surface layer of the skin down to the upper part of the dermis. Medium peels treat wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tone.
Deep chemical peels remove skin cells down into the dermal layer of the skin and are used to treat rough skin texture, deep scars and wrinkles, and precancerous skin growths.

Testimonial

“Got a diamond glow yesterday and my face feels like it’s drinking water from a fountain of youth. I looked in the mirror this morning and I think I can see actual diamonds inside my pours. They also watched my dog at the front desk for 45 minutes. Five stars for brotox”

Who is a Candidate

Chemical peels may not be safe for patients with sensitive skin or those with an active acne breakout, skin infection, cold sores, or history of keloid scarring. Women who are pregnant may also have to wait to receive treatment. If you are not a candidate for chemical peels, we can recommend a facial, injectables, or other cosmetic treatments.

Chemical Peel Treatment
Before a chemical peel treatment, patients will meet with Dana and our team for a skin evaluation. Dana will help you determine the right strength of chemical peel for your skin type and treatment goals. During the chemical peel treatment, the chosen chemical solution will be applied to the skin on a cotton ball or gauze. Patients may feel mild to moderate stinging and can be given a fan to ease their discomfort. As the chemical peel absorbs into the skin, the skin will turn white or gray.

Recovery From Chemical Peels
After a chemical peel, recovery time will vary depending on the strength of the chemical solution. A light chemical peel will only cause slight redness with little to no peeling. A medium chemical peel will result in light peeling and scabbing that will gradually flake off in about 7-14 days. After a deep chemical peel, severe skin redness, moderate swelling, and scabbing are common. It can take a few days to see the effects of a chemical peel, but the treated skin will eventually peel.
Make sure to keep the skin moisturized and avoid picking at the scabs. They will naturally flake off after two weeks. Since new skin cells will be resurfaced as the surface layer of dead and damaged skin flakes off, patients should also avoid direct sun exposure and exfoliating skincare products. These factors could cause scarring or damage to the surrounding skin.

How Long Will Results Last After a Chemical Peel?
Once the newly exfoliated skin heals, the skin rejuvenating effects of a chemical peel can last for several weeks. While deep peels typically do not need to be repeated, a light or medium peel can be repeated as needed.
