What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a state-of-the-art skin treatment ideal for renewing your skin texture. This smoothing treatment can help your skin look younger or can remove unwanted hair from your face or body. Dermaplaning uses a scalpel or razor device to remove damaged skin and excess hair. Dermaplaning can boost your skin’s radiance, reduce the appearance of aging skin, and remove bothersome hair.

Who is a Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Candidates for dermaplaning include adults who want to address acne scars, dull skin, peach fuzz, sun damage, and fine lines. You should avoid dermaplaning if you have active acne, cold sores, eczema, psoriasis, burns, and rashes. Since dermaplaning is not an abrasive treatment it is exceptional for anyone who has rosacea or melasma (hormonal pigmentation). The best way to determine whether you are an ideal candidate for dermaplaning is through a sit-down consultation with one of our skin experts at Coastal Medical Aesthetics.

The Dermaplaning Treatment

This treatment consists of prepping the skin with a cleanser and a moisturizing cream or oil. This will help the razor-like tool glide seamlessly across the skin. Your physician will then manually exfoliate your skin with the dermatome tool to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the face.  You may feel a scratching sensation or gentle stinging during the procedure. It is uncommon for any discomfort to occur during the skin treatment. Afterward, your specialist will apply a growth factor, moisturizer, and sunscreen. This treatment can last minutes to hours depending on the size of the area that you are treating.

Dermaplaning Recovery and Results

Immediately after your dermaplaning treatment, your skin may appear red, tender, and swollen. Your specialist will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions including when to take over-the-counter pain medication for your comfort. Recovery will vary based on each patient. After one treatment you will notice smoother skin, less hair, smaller pores, better product penetration, and a smoother make-up application. With repeated treatments, you will notice collagen production, sun damage, and pigment becomes lighter. Many individuals receive multiple dermaplaning appointments, keeping up with them regularly. You must let your skin fully heal before coming back for another appointment.
