Whether you shave, thread, or wax your hair away, daily hair removal can become a chore. Good news travels fast and we have all heard about laser hair removal. It’s as common as waxing nowadays.  But we do need to remember laser hair removal is a medical procedure and should be done only by medically trained and licensed practitioners.  In California, this includes a licensed M.D., R.N., PA, or Nurse Practitioner. At Coastal Medical Aesthetics, our skilled staff looks forward to providing you with effective results after your procedure.

What is Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

During laser hair removal treatments, a laser beam of light passes harmlessly through the skin but is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle.  By absorbing this laser energy, the hair follicles are disabled by the thermal heat, impairing their ability to grow.  This thermal damage causes delayed re-growth of the hair and permanent destruction to the hair follicle.  Unlike electrolysis, which kills one hair follicle at a time, the laser reaches and treats hundreds of follicles at a time. Common treatment areas for laser hair removal include the legs, armpits, bikini area, upper lip, and chin.

Who is a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Patients who have dark hair and light skin are ideal candidates for laser hair removal treatment. This contrasting combination allows the laser to target the pigment within the hair with ease. It is important to note that some lasers effectively treat lighter follicles and tanned skin tones. Your skin must be healthy and free of rashes, infections, and wounds. To determine whether you are a good fit for laser hair removal treatment, scheduling an in-depth one-on-one consultation can help you determine if you should move forward with the treatment.

The Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Your laser hair removal treatment will begin with a specialist prepping you by cleansing the treatment area and giving you protective eyewear. After, they will run the laser device against the surface of your skin where a beam of light targets unwanted hair follicles. You may experience a slight snapping sensation against the treated skin. Since the hair grows in cycles, it can take four treatments for hair reduction to appear.

Laser Hair Removal Recovery and Results

After your laser hair removal treatment, you can experience swelling around the targeted hair follicles, temporary pigmentation changes, mild redness of the skin, and blistering or peeling of the skin.

Laser hair removal will take up to several treatments depending on the area and how the hair responds to the laser.  It is important to note that laser hair removal will not work on white, gray, or light blonde hair follicles.
