Laughing, frowning, squinting, and other facial movements can lead to wrinkling of the skin. As you age, wrinkles and fine lines can develop due to facial fat loss, sun damage, and lower levels of collagen and elastin. Subcutaneous fat loss can result in the facial muscles being closer to the surface of the skin. Being closer to aging skin, these muscles can begin to leave their mark on you causing the formation of fine lines, wrinkles, and folds. Learn more about Botox before deciding if it is the right treatment for your cosmetic concerns.

What is Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator treatment formulated with small amounts of botulinum toxin type A. This toxin disrupts the nerve signals to your muscles. This disruption decreases muscle movement in wrinkle-prone areas, smoothing your facial folds, fine lines, and wrinkles to give you a more youthful appearance. Botox can be used to smooth crow’s feet, forehead lines, frown lines, lip lines, and more. Botox can also diminish neck banding and improve dimpling, lift the corners of the mouth, soften the jawline, and correct a gummy smile. Botox can also address these medical conditions:

  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Bladder incontinence
  • Neck pain
  • Muscle twitching

Who is a Candidate for Botox?

Candidates for Botox include individuals with cosmetic concerns related to their wrinkles and fine lines or those who would like to use Botox as a preventative measure before their wrinkles develop. These treatments are known as Baby Botox injections. Candidates for Botox must be nonsmokers, have generally good health, and have realistic expectations of the procedure and what it can do. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for Botox is through a consultation with one of our educated Botox injectors at Coastal Medical Aesthetics.

The Botox Treatment

During your Botox treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the cleansed treatment area. This will help you to feel comfortable during treatment with minimal pain or discomfort. Once the numbing cream is actively working, your highly skilled injector will carefully inject your treatment areas with the botulinum toxin treatment. The amount of Botox that you require is based on the amount and severity of the wrinkles and lines that you have. Botox injection appointments take approximately 15 minutes or less.

Botox Recovery and Results

Recovery after your Botox treatment is mild, calling for no downtime or recovery time. This will allow you to resume your daily activities with ease. It is important that you do not rub or massage any treatment areas because this can cause migration of the product, causing facial weakness or facial sagging. You may experience temporary bruising, swelling, itchiness, and redness. You may notice results begin to emerge after two days, but it can take up to one week for your full results to settle in. To maintain your youthful look, you can schedule regular appointments as you see needed.
